This rumour was sprung by comments made by
center Eric Belanger. Belanger reportedly told a french newspaper that he will be returning to the Washington Capitals. He also said they won't be announcing the deal right away because the Caps have a trade in the works.
Comments as such have a way of grabbing the attention of starving journalists hoping to make a well educated guess on a potential trade. As these comments have now turned into Sheldon Souray or Kevin Bieksa for Tomas Fleishman.
What's even more funny is that this reputable Oilers website wouldn't give the name of "their source".
Don't believe the hype, this "rumour" was a suggested possibility given by James Mirtle of the globe and mail. He simply implied that the Caps may be targeting free agent Willie Mitchell, Canucks Kevin Bieksa or Oilers Sheldon Souray.
A suggestion should never be taken as a rumour. Nor should we be teased with "we can't name our sources" when that source was just snatched from a comment in the globe and mail.
How was this nixed as suggested in the title?
ReplyDeleteAnd by reputable site you mean Cult of Hockey?
Peter Adler does have good sources (most of the time) and he doesn't really need to tell us who it is.
I don't think it will happen either, but he may be on to something. I don't think it's nixed as you have suggested.
It's nixed as a rumour in my opinion. As a "suggestion" by a journalist from the globe and mail is not a rumour at all. I also don't believe James Mirtle ment for this to become classified as a "rumour". Since when does discussion based from opinion automatically become rumour?
ReplyDeletePeter Adler and the Cult of Hockey are good people. Hence my use of "reputable site" rather then me naming names and trying to burn these people. However, this blew up on twitter - something needed to be straightened out.
At Etownhockey we may discuss possibilities for potential trades as well. Never should it be taken as rumour and demoralized like an Eklund site.
Read this article, which was written over a week prior to Adler's report.

And tell me Adler didn't just scoop this.
