2 years is a good term for a player who hasn't yet carved a niche on this team, but one who seems to have the upside to become a great player. He brings a great attitude and as far as the fans perspective goes, he has shown leadership in each and every interview he has ever served. A 2 year deal also comes 1 year before Hall, Paajarvi and Eberle's contracts are up. The term serves it's purpose to not handcuff the Oilers with a bulk of promising players needing new contracts, it also prevents Gagner seeking UFA status as it won't be possible once this 2 year contract is up. The Oilers will then have a better idea of what Gagner brings, and they will have the time to negotiate a longer term thereafter.
It's no doubt Gagner is expected to be a key component towards the rebuild of this franchise. The Oilers are looking for much more out of him, and Steve Tambellini has made motivational comments concering Gagner. There is high expectations, the Oilers need Gagner to take that next step and he has 2 years to prove his value.
With this contract out of the way, Cogliano should be next up on Tambellini's list. We have recently seen Brule fetch 1.85 million for 2 years and now Gagner at 2.27 million for 2 year. If this is any indication, I would assume Cogliano will be at or below Brule's salary and receive 1 or 2 years. However, the Oilers are at a hault with Cogliano, as they were with Gagner, with the players side looking for a longer term then the Oilers are willing to offer. It's a waiting game now, but I do think Cogliano has another year to prove before he can demand the duration he is seeking.
Good signing and perfect length, Tambellini just keeps on proving he's becoming a great GM. This contract keeps Gagner motivated, he's at great risk of being leaped by the younger prospects. He's going to need to work extra hard the for the next 2 years. That number 1 centre spot is up for grabs.
